My latest novel which will be published in May 2007 is The Truth About Love.
It is a story of one house, two secrets and three women.
Although the novel is set in the present day, the house holds a secret from the past. I have loved the historical research for this book. And I have returned to Wimbledon Village where Wives and Lovers is set.
Synopsis
North View is a red-brick Victorian house newly converted into two flats with views over Wimbledon Common. The Truth About Love follows the stories of the two women who move in - and one who has lived there before - each apparently very different.
Sally is a woman with a seemingly enviable life, married to Edward, and mother of two-year old Louis. But beneath their happy exterior, Sally struggles with the legacy of Edward's past: his ex-wife Pia, a successful and high-profile author, his resentful step-daughter Hope - and Edward's mixed feelings about the family he left behind. When Sally discovers evidence which hints at a dark secret to the house, her need to escape the strains of her marriage lead her on an obsessive quest to discover the truth. But can she solve the challenges of the present as well as the past?
Anna lives in the garden flat. Her life and choices are the antithesis of those followed by Sally. She has always shunned domesticity. A driven and workaholic television film-maker her new project, filming three couples whose marriages are in crisis, leads her to ask questions she has hitherto avoided about the importance of family, the ties of blood and whether her legacy will be work or family. For Anna, the secret she uncovers threatens the lives and future of a family, a child and her own career.
Reviews
"Varley is bang on target for the mainstream women's fiction market - astute,
observant and a canny hand at the plot helm. This is a satisfying
read, setting out the choices women have to make: home or career,
children or independence, and as Varley emphasizes, both have their
perils. Prime holiday reading."
